The Phoenix Flies: A City Wide Celebration of Living Landmarks kicks off this Saturday with over 200 free events planned for the next next 15 days totaling over 6,000 opportunities to enjoy Atlanta’s rich history. The Phoenix Flies was created in 2003 by the Atlanta Preservation Center (APC) as a way to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the rescue of the Fox Theatre. This year’s events include walking tours of Atlanta’s historic neighborhoods, cemetery tours, lectures about historic buildings and areas, Ponce City Market tours, poetry readings, church tours and much more! For a complete calendar, visit APC’s website.
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of this event, the APC initiated the Anniversary Photography Project (APP). Eight Atlanta area fine art photographers were asked to “focus their lens” on the sites celebrated during Phoenix Flies, thereby using the history and art of the built environment to create new art. The more than 80 images can be found on the Atlanta Preservation Center’s website, in a book that is available to the public for purchase and select prints are on exhibit and available for purchase in the LP Grant Mansion’s Drawing Room Gallery during Phoenix Flies.
