A recent article on CNNMoney.com reports that new construction starts rose 12% from November and are up 37% over December of 2012. Builders started construction at an annual pace of 954,000 homes last month beating economists’ expectations of 889,000 starts. Applications for new building permits were little change from November, but the annual rate of 903,000 reported in December is up 28.8% from last year’s level. With new construction rising, shares of publicly traded homebuilders have been soaring. PulteGroup, KB Home and Lennar are all trading near 52 week highs with shares doubling over the past year.
